Full Description: Description:
The course provides Hospital First Receivers/Healthcare workers with essential knowledge and skills that will assist them when responding to a radiological/nuclear Weapons of Mass            Destruction (WMD) incident in the safest manner possible for themselves and victims. The course will provide the Participants with information on how to use radiological tools and              contamination management processes to limit the spread and exposure to radioactive contaminants. The best practices presented in this course can be applied to any  incident that     involves radiological contamination.

Course Objectives:
-This course is designed to provide Healthcare workers with baseline knowledge and skills to
manage radiological contamination that may be present in the facilities or found on patients
and staff. This will be accomplished using scenarios and examples of controls that provide
protective actions that can minimize health risks while performing emergency medical services
after a radiological/nuclear WMD incident.
-The lessons focus on contamination management, radiation    detection and monitoring
instruments, and decontamination processes. The training will provide further understanding
of the tools and skills needed to protect both the Healthcare provider and the victim during the
final lesson, which uses hands-on drills for learning how to use radiological instruments to
locate and identify radiological contaminants, what decontamination  methodologies can
assist in minimizing radiation exposure and how to handle contaminated, non-ambulatory
victims.

Target Audience:
-Healthcare Workers termed First Receivers
-First Receivers includes personnel in the following roles: Clinicians, Physicians , nurses, nurse
practitioners and physician assistants.
-Hospital staff who have a role in receiving and treating contaminated victims

Prerequisites:
You must be a US Citizen to take this course. If you are not, please let us know by email for further instruction at OEM.TRAINING@DHSES.NY.GOV

All participants must have a FEMA Student Identification (FEMA SID) number. Students can search for their existing/create a new FEMA SID at: https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid/

Cost: There is no fee for the course. Food, lodging & transportation costs are the responsibility of the participant.

Completion:  Participants who actively participate and attend all course contact hours will receive a Certificate of Attendance for the course.
