Communications Exercise (COMMEX)
Full Description
The COMMEX is a follow-on to the COML, COMT, INCM, INTD, RADO and AUXC training courses.  It provides an opportunity for COML, COMT, INCM, INTD, RADO and AUXC trainees to demonstrate proficiency and complete requirements in the respective Position Task Books (PTB).

Public safety professionals who have completed an COML, COMT, INCM, INTD, RADO, or AUXC course must complete a series of competency tasks in their PTB as the next step in becoming a certified COML, COMT, INCM, INTD, RADO, or AUXC for their agency. In this  exercise, tasks are designed to simulate challenges Communications Unit trainees will encounter during an incident.

Targeted Audience:
Public Safety Communications personnel and COMU Program personnel seeking to meet continuing education requirements and to test and exercise their knowledge and proficiency in a COMU position, trainees that have completed a communications course

May 19th will include the exercise overview, participant briefings, safety, equipment walk-throughs and review, and more. The exercise with take place on May 20th and 21st with multiple operational periods.  More information will be provided to participants prior to the offering.

At the end of the exercise, recognized COMLs can sign off on COML, INCM, INTD, AUXC, and RADO tasks within the PTB for trainees who have successfully demonstrated their proficiency at completing the task(s). Recognized COMTs can sign off COMT trainees. Recognized AUXCs can sign off on AUXC trainees, and so on.

This exercise will:
Provide opportunities for testing COML, COMT, INCM, INTD, RADO, and AUXC trainee proficiency
Promote state recognition and certification programs
Increase utilization of recently trained Communications Unit personnel
Integrate Communications Unit personnel into the Incident Command System (ICS)
Mobile communications equipment and resources will be integrated into the COMMEX

Cost:
There is NO FEE for this course. Lunch will be provided. Travel and all other meals are the responsibility of the course participant. Lodging will be provided for eligible public sector personnel - see details in the sign up information.

Check in and registration for participants starts at 0730 on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
Exercise start times, vehicle check-ins and equipment set up will be coordinated by the exercise planning team.

Individuals must have completed a Communications course offered by the Office of Interoperable and Emergency Communications to attend.

Registration:
All student registrations will be reviewed by the OIEC with approvals sent to students NO LATER THAN 2 weeks prior to the start of the class. Registration does not guarantee a seat in the class. If you are accepted into this course, you will receive a confirmation email from the Center.

Lodging:
Lodging will be provided for eligible public sector personnel.
You are eligible for lodging if your residence and official workstation are more than 50 miles from the SPTC and you are public sector personnel. Lodging is not available for federal employees or private industry participants. If you are eligible, you will be sent an email with lodging instructions prior to the start of the course. You must be enrolled in the course and have received lodging approval from the SPTC before arriving at the Center, or your lodging will not be covered, and you will not be allowed in the class.
