Communications Unit Technician (COMT) Training Course
Full Description
This class provides introductory and refresher training for the NIMS ICS COMT position. It introduces public safety professionals and support staff to various communications concepts and technologies including interoperable communications solutions, LMR communications, satellite, telephone, data, and computer technologies used in incident response and planned events. It is designed for state/territory, tribal, urban, and local emergency response professionals and support personnel in all disciplines who have a technical communications background.

Participants develop the essential core competencies required for performing the duties of the COMT in an all-hazards incident, including responsibilities while operating in a local, regional, or state-level All-Hazards Incident Management Team.

The course is instructor-led and supports learning through discussion, lecture, and hands-on exercises to explain processes used for establishment and operation of the technical communications resources for an incident or planned event. The course provides a realistic, hands-on approach to mastering the tasks and skills of a COMT. Each attendee receives a Position Task Book.

This class is taught by NYS COMU Program instructors who have both practitioner and Communications Unit experience. Prior to the on-site class, OIEC staff will work with the requesting site to incorporate communications technologies in use by the participants’ agencies.  

There must be a minimum of 10 or a maximum 16 vetted/qualified students two weeks in advance of the course in order for the DHSES-OIEC to conduct the course.

Copies of prerequisites must be provided to OIEC via DHSES LMS or email and verified two (2) weeks in advance of the course.  Students can email completion certificates and documents to OIEC.Training@dhses.ny.gov .

To look up your FEMA completion certificates, go to FEMA EMI Student Portal https://training.fema.gov/student/sssp.aspx .  You will need your 10-digit FEMA student ID and provide your city of birth.

Students can email copies of completion certificates for IS/ICS courses to OIEC: OIEC.Training@dhses.ny.gov.

Cost and Lodging:
There is NO fee for this course.  Lunch will NOT be provided.  Travel and meals are the responsibility of the course participant.

No Show Policy:
Failure to attend a class you have been enrolled in can result in the denial of future course enrollment.  If you have not received a confirmation (or denial) two weeks prior to the course start date, please contact DHSES-OIEC at (518) 322-4911, or OIEC.Training@dhses.ny.gov.
