Course Description
This course is designed to provide public safety officials an introductory opportunity to safely fly small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) at night to support their agency’s program. We will address the increased risk associated with flying at night by providing participants both ground instruction and practical flight experience necessary mitigate risk as much as possible. Participants will learn the key differences between planning and executing sUAS flights at night vs during the day.

Workshop Topics
The ground portion of this course will cover topics specifically related to operating under Part 107at night, including UAS regulations, human factors associated with night ops, additional equipment requirements, and risk management techniques/best practices. Flight training will provide participants an opportunity to see first-hand how different the world looks at night vs during the day. Flying will be the main focus of this course, allowing participants maximum opportunity to experience night flight with a focus on launch/landing area preparation, positional awareness, crew coordination, and obstacle avoidance.

Course Provider
This training opportunity is provided by the State Preparedness Training Center (SPTC), in conjunction with Department of Environmental Conservation, The New York State Police, Office of Fire Prevention and Control and NUAIR

Target Audience
Interested candidates for this course must have their FAA Part 107 certification at the point of
registration. Participants must be first responders or other public safety officials whos participation is sponsored by their agency and whose focus is on gaining training and experience to perform their duties at this agency.

This course is limited to 12 students. The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES)reserves the right to determine eligibility for this course.

Attendees will have the option to bring their own quadcopter style sUAS, capable of at least 15 minutes of flight time, equipped with a camera, and required night flight lighting. Additional sUAS batteries and a battery charging station are also required. A laptop computer is highly desirable. The SPTC will provide you with the DJI Inspire 1 if you are unable to bring your own.

Cost
There is NO FEE for this course. Dinner will be provided. Travel and all other meals are the responsibility of the course participant.

All student registrations will be reviewed by the SPTC with approvals sent to students NO LATER THAN two weeks prior to the start of the class. Registration does not guarantee a seat in the class. If you are accepted into this course, you will receive a confirmation email from the Center.

No Show Policy

Lodging
Lodging will be provided on the night of training for participating public sector personnel.
You are eligible for lodging if your residence and official work station are more than 50 miles from the SPTC and you a State or Local responder. Lodging is not available for federal employees or private industry participants. You must be enrolled in the course and have received lodging confirmation from the SPTC before arriving at the Center, or your lodging will not be covered and you will not be allowed in the class.
