Description:
AWR-140 provides an introduction to Radiological/Nuclear WMD operations for first responders and others, who may be tasked with response or support missions. The course provides fundamental knowledge regarding recognition of the threat or incident, protective measures, notifications and securing the incident area. The course addresses competencies found in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 472, Standard for Professional Competence of
Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents (2013) for Awareness and Operations levels.


Objectives:
-Explain ionizing radiation, its sources, properties and methods of measurement.
-Recognize possible radiological/nuclear threats and the consequences of a radiological/nuclear incident.
-Recognize radiological/nuclear indicators and clues as part of the on-scene analysis/size up and make notification requirements of a first responder during a radiological/nuclear WMD incident.
-Identify and initiate awareness level protective actions and isolation techniques at the scene to reduce radiation exposure and/or contamination to themselves and others.

Prerequisite:
You must be a US Citizen to take this course. If you are not a U.S. citizen please e-mail oem.training@dhses.ny.gov for further instructions.

All participants must have a FEMA Student Identification (FEMA SID) number. Students can search for their existing/create a new FEMA SID at: https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid/.

Any and all other prerequisite requirements will be managed by the consortium provider. If any additional prerequisites are required as part of the enrollment process the consortium partner will contact you directly prior to the course.

Cost:
There is no fee for the course. Food, Lodging & Transportation costs are the responsibility of the participant.

Completion:
Participants who actively participate attend all course contact hours will receive a Certificate of Attendance for the course.
