Course Description
The UAS Operator Course is a combined ground and flight school designed to prepare participants to safely and effectively manage and conduct UAS operations. The instructional team will work with students to connect statewide and national policies and best practices to  a variety of mission areas. The course includes classroom, skill, and scenario-based activities.

Interested candidates for this course must have their FAA Part 107 certification at the point of registration; please refer to the "Audience" section of this announcement for further details.
During this course students will first operate the Syma X5C trainer platform and then advance to the DJI Inspire I platform. All equipment required to successfully complete the course will be provided. Students should not bring any UAS platforms nor equipment to the course. Students should create a DJI account prior to the start of the course.

Course Topics
This course includes legal and ethical UAS operations, flight authorizations, crew resource management, pre-flight decision making, risk analysis, mission planning, record keeping, photography and video, practical flight exercises and scenario-based activities.

Audience
Participants must be first responders or other public safety officials who participation is sponsored by their  agency and whose focus is on gaining training and experience to perform their duties at this agency. Interested candidates for this course must have their FAA Part 107 certification at the point of registration for this course; a copy of this certification must be emailed to the SPTC at SPTC.INFO@dhses.ny.gov.  Interested candidates must  also provide a brief email or letter from a command-level official in their agency that certifies support for the candidate’s participation in this course.  This correspondence can be emailed to the SPTC address listed above.  This course is limited to 12 students. The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) reserves the right to determine eligibility for this course.

Registration: All student registrations will be reviewed by the SPTC with approvals sent to students NO LATER THAN 2 weeks prior to the start of the class.  Registration does not guarantee a seat in the class.  If you are accepted into this course, you will receive a confirmation email from the Center.

Lodging
Lodging will be provided for eligible public sector personnel.  
You are eligible for lodging if your residence and official workstation are more than 50 miles from the SPTC and you are public sector personnel.  Lodging is not available for federal employees or private industry participants.  If you are eligible, you will be sent an email with lodging instructions prior to the start of the course. You must be enrolled in the course and have received lodging approval from the SPTC before arriving at the Center, or your lodging will not be covered, and you will not be allowed in the class.
