Course Description
Basic Historical Cell Site Analysis Course is designed to be an introduction to basic cellular analysis and geospatial mapping. The class provides instruction in the basic principles of cellular networks, how call detail records provided by the major cellular providers are created, how to read and understand call detail records, and how to utilize call detail records in law enforcement investigations to illustrate a cellular phone’s general location.

At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to:
• Understand the basic principles and concepts of a cellular network and how a cellular device connects with a cell tower.
• Interpret and analyze the call detail records obtained from the major cellular providers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon)
• Utilize mapping software to accurately depict the general location of a cellular device at the time it connected to the cellular network.
• Understand the capabilities and limitations of cellular record analysis.
• Interpret and analyze tower dump records from all major cellular providers.
• Be familiar with the resources available through CAST.

Audience
The target audience for this course is Law Enforcement Investigators, Assistant District Attorneys, Investigative Analysts, and support staff to investigations.

This course is being taught by a team of instructors from the FBI Cellular Analysis Survey Team (CAST)

Cost
There is NO FEE for this course. Lunch will be provided. Travel and all other meals are the responsibility of the course participant.

Resources Required
Prerequisites for Attendance
Students must bring their own laptop to the class and have the current version of CASTViz and any version of Microsoft Excel installed on the laptop. Go to https://castviz.com/ to get the current version of CASTViz. Please ensure you can open the program prior to attending the class. An understanding of Microsoft Excel is required for class attendance. A knowledge of Excel spreadsheet functions to include the following is necessary for successful class participation:
Freeze, Sort, Find/Replace, Insert, Formulas (Left, Right, Concatenate), and Pivot tables. After registering for the course, the instructors will send the student a short Excel tutorial for these functions that should be completed before the class.

National Domestic Communication Assistance Center (NDCAC)
It is recommended that participants create an NDCAC account and complete the Excel computer based training prior to attending class. NDCAC provides numerous resources that will be necessary when completing investigations in the field.

Lodging
Lodging will be provided  for participating public sector personnel.

You are eligible for lodging if your residence and official work station are more than 50 miles from the SPTC and you are a State or Local responder.  Lodging is not available for federal employees or private industry participants. You must be enrolled in the course and have received lodging confirmation from the SPTC before arriving at the Center, or your lodging will not be covered and you will not be allowed in the class.
