Description:
This course will familiarize participants with the science of natural hazards, best practices associated with personal disaster preparedness, and disaster preparedness considerations for those with access and functional needs. Participants will be introduced to all three categories of hazards, but course instruction will focus on those natural hazards relevant to participants local area. Participants will also be introduced to best practices for personal preparedness prior to a disaster and encouraged to discuss plans and actions that they have already taken. Participants will then explore special considerations for disaster preparedness for dependents and those with access and functional needs. Finally, a class activity will be presented to allow participants to test their ability to prepare and react to a natural hazard.

Objectives:
This course will enable participants to:

-Discuss best practices to prepare for the impacts of local natural hazards
-Identify methods of assisting care receivers to prepare for natural disasters
-Identify appropriate preparedness actions to take during a  natural disaster

-Citizen/Community Volunteer
-Senior Health Care Providers

Prerequisites:
You must be a US Citizen to take this course. If you are not, please let us know by email for further instruction at OEM.TRAINING@DHSES.NY.GOV

All participants must have a FEMA Student Identification (FEMA SID) number. Students can search for their existing/create a new FEMA SID at: https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid/

Any and all other prerequisite requirements will be managed by the consortium provider. If any additional prerequisites are required as part of the enrollment process the consortium partner will contact you directly prior to the course.

Cost:
There is no fee for the course. Food, lodging & transportation costs are the responsibility of the participant.

Completion:
Participants who actively participate and attend all course contact hours will receive a Certificate of Attendance for the course.
