Full Description: Description:

This course provides emergency managers, first responders, and community members from all sectors with a basic understanding of the latest knowledge in hurricane science, forecasting, warning, and preparedness. This course enhances the ability of state/local decision-makers to identify and describe the hazards associated with hurricanes and to better prepare for and mitigate the impacts of high winds, heavy rain, and storm surge.

Objectives:
- Summarize the structure and characteristics of hurricanes and tropical cyclones and their attendant hazards, including high winds, heavy rain, and storm surge.
- Explain the forecast process and uncertainty associated with predicting hurricane track and intensity.
- Interpret official forecast and warning products from the National Weather Service.
- Use available decision support tools to prepare themselves, their families, and their organizations when hurricanes threaten.

Prerequisite:
You must be a US Citizen to take this course. If you are not a U.S. citizen, please e-mail oem.training@dhses.ny.gov for further instructions.

All participants must have a FEMA Student Identification (FEMA SID) number. Students can search for their existing/create a new FEMA SID at: https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid/.

Any and all other prerequisite requirements will be managed by the consortium provider. If any additional prerequisites are required as part of the enrollment process the consortium partner will contact you directly prior to the course.

Cost:
There is no fee for the course. Food, lodging, and transportation costs are the responsibility of the participant.

Completion: Participants, who actively participate, attend all course contact hours and pass a written test will receive a Certificate of Completion for the course.
