Course Description
This course is designed to train law enforcement and public safety officers to employ department procured and issued personal radiation detectors (PRDs) within the bounds of the jurisdiction/agency operational environment, including local instruments, procedures, and legal considerations. The course provides training and extensive hands-on practice with real radioactive material. PRD instruments used in the course are the instruments owned and issued by the responder organization. The responder organization will provide PRDs for student use in the course, preferably one PRD per student.

Topics Include
Instrument: Thermo RAD-EYE
Participants in this course will detect and locate the presence of radiation and/or radiological material; identify and distinguish among false alarms due to background radiation, alarms due to legitimate causes, and alarms due to illicit radiological/nuclear material; and measure the approximate radiation level that generated the alarm upon detecting, locating, and assessing the alarm.

Audience
The target audience for this course is Law Enforcement , Fire Service, Hazardous Materials (HazMat), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Public Works, and other response personnel assigned to duties employing a PRD. Attendees and/or their agency must have a Radiation Detection/Identification Program in place that requires this training. The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) reserves the right to determine eligibility for this course.


Compliance
This course complies with ANSI N42.37-2006, “American National Standard for Training Requirements for Homeland Security Purposes Using Radiation Detector Instrumentation for Interdiction and Prevention.”

Radioactive Source Disclaimer
Low level radioactive materials will be used as training aids during the course.  It is designed and monitored so participants receive only minor radiation doses (lower than a chest X-ray or typical round-trip airline flight across the U.S.).

There is NO FEE for this course.  Lunch will be provided.  Travel and all other meals are the responsibility of the course participant. Lodging will be provided for eligible public sector personnel.

All student registrations will be reviewed by the SPTC with approvals sent to students NO LATER THAN 2 weeks prior to the start of the class.  Registration does not guarantee a seat in the class.  If you are accepted into this course, you will receive a confirmation email from the Center.

Lodging will be provided for eligible public sector personnel.  
You are eligible for lodging if your residence and official workstation are more than 50 miles from the SPTC and you are public sector personnel.  Lodging is not available for federal employees or private industry participants.  If you are eligible, you will be sent an email with lodging instructions prior to the start of the course. You must be enrolled in the course and have received lodging approval from the SPTC before arriving at the Center, or your lodging will not be covered, and you will not be allowed in the class.
