Course Description
The SWAT Operator course is specifically designed to train selected police officers in the Tactics, Techniques and Procedures necessary to resolve special police emergencies which require skill sets above and beyond the capability of a normal police patrol response.  The course is being delivered jointly by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. This course has prerequisites.  The DCJS Patrol Rifle course will be administered concurrently during firearms training. Upon successful completion of the SWAT Operator course, students will also receive their DCJS Patrol Rifle course certification.

Audience
This course is reserved for tactical team members who have worked with the SPTC to have seats held for this delivery.
This course is restricted to BMP certified police officers who have successfully met the course prerequisite requirements as set forth in the New York State DCJS SWAT Operator Course Instructor Guide. The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) reserves the right to determine eligibility for this course.

Student Equipment Requirements
Each student MUST pass prerequisite testing prior to starting the course. The purpose of the testing is to ensure each student is able to fully engage in the required training. The testing includes:
Perspective students must be examined by a medical doctor licensed to practice medicine in the State of New York to ensure they are able to engage in the strenuous physical activities of SWAT training. This includes the ability to engage in strenuous training activities and perform skill demonstrations while wearing individual SWAT equipment including an air purifying respirator.
A physical fitness test consisting of a 1 ½ mile run, sit-ups, and pushups scored at the 70th percentile (age and gender normed). This is the same fitness test used in the Basic Course for Police Officers at a higher level of fitness.
A handgun shooting evaluation with a minimum score of 90%.
Air Purifying Respirator (APR) fit testing pursuant to §27-a of the Labor Law (29 CFR 1910.135).
Students who do not submit a completed SWAT Operator Course – Applicant Prerequisite Testing form on or before the first day of the course will not be permitted to remain in the course.

This is a four week course.  The course will begin at 8:00am and go until 5:00pm each day, unless otherwise noted.  Check-in will be at 7:30am each morning.

All student registrations will be reviewed by the SPTC with approvals sent to students NO LATER THAN 2 weeks prior to the start of the class.  Registration does not guarantee a seat in the class.  If you are accepted into this course, you will receive a confirmation email from the Center.  

No Show Policy
Failure to attend a class you have registered for can result in restriction on future course attendance and agency notification. If you have not received a confirmation or denial two weeks prior to the course date, please contact DHSES, SPTC at (315) 768-5689 or SPTC.INFO@dhses.ny.gov

Lodging
Lodging will be provided for eligible public sector personnel.  
You are eligible for lodging if your residence and official workstation are more than 50 miles from the SPTC and you are public sector personnel.  Lodging is not available for federal employees or private industry participants.  If you are eligible, you will be sent an email with lodging instructions prior to the start of the course. You must be enrolled in the course and have received lodging approval from the SPTC before arriving at the Center, or your lodging will not be covered, and you will not be allowed in the class.

*NOTE* This course is comprised of several activities requiring physical exertion. This includes a great deal of time walking, jogging and standing, as well as the negotiation of stairwells between multiple floor levels.  Some of this activity may be conducted in low-light conditions.   Accordingly, every student should be aware of this and consider self-exclusion if s/he has concerns about their physical condition or suffers from any health or other physical abnormality that may place them at risk during periods of significant physical exertion.
